About the Company

ZE PAK SA delivers about 8.5 per cent of all electricity generated in Poland and is the second largest producer of electricity obtained from brown coal in this country. Its total installed generating capacity is 2512 MW. The power stations operated by the Company were built between 1958 and 1974. In April 1970 they were combined into a single enterprise named Zespół Elektrowni Pątnów–Adamów–Konin, or Pątnów–Adamów–Konin Power Plants, (ZE PAK for short), and in December 1994, by a decision of the Minister of Industry and Commerce, the state enterprise ZE PAK was transformed into a single-shareholder joint stock company, ZE PAK SA, owned by the State Treasury. The years from 1995 to 1999 were a period of preparations for the privatization and organizational restructuring of the Company. In March 1999 Elektrim SA became a strategic investor in ZE PAK SA, and in 2000, in accordance with the privatization agreement, it raised the share capital of the Company, increasing its stake to approximately 39 per cent. The remaining share capital was divided between the State Treasury (50%) and the employees (10%).
Some restructuring decisions were made in December 1999. In January 2000, ZE PAK SA obtained its present organizational structure, with five subsidiaries spun off from the parent company. The purpose of the reorganization was to improve efficiency and introduce a modern management system in line with prevailing trends in power utilities worldwide.

The mission of ZE PAK SA is to produce environmentally clean electricity and heat in an efficient and safe way.

The Company’s strategy is oriented towards development and modernity founded on state-of-the-art technology, innovative organizational solutions, and a highly specialized staff of engineers and technicians.
ZE PAK SA’s commitment to modern and professional management was confirmed by ISO 9001:2000 certification for electricity and heat generation obtained by the Company in July 2001. As the next stage of its certification efforts, in March 2002 the Company secured certification for its Occupational Health and Safety Management as compliant with the PN-N-18001 and OHSAS 18001 standards and implemented an Integrated Environmental Safety and Quality Management System compliant with the ISO 14000 standards. Since 2003, modern management of the Company is supported by a mySAP.com IT system, which covers all the key areas of the Company’s activities and supports the Company's business processes.
In March 2005 the Supervisory Board of the Company adopted the ZE PAK SA Development Strategy 2005–2005. The top priority is to prepare the Company’s power generation base for long–term operation by 2011. Objectives subsumed under this goal include: constructing a 464 MW power unit at the Pątnów II Power Plant (brought into operation on 31 December 2007), prolonging the useful life of four units at the Pątnów I Power Plant, and preparing the power stations of ZE PAK SA to meet future, more stringent environmental requirements. Since 2005, the Company’s power plants have been holding a concession for the co-combustion of biomass, and thus for the production of ‘green energy’.
To meet that goal, work has begun to construct two flue gas desulphurization (FGD) systems for the Pątnów I Power Plant and another FGD facility for Pątnów II. This project is carried out by PAK ODSIARCZANIE Sp. z o.o., a member company of the ZE PAK SA Group. Highly efficient FGD facilities will enable ZE PAK SA to meet tighter SO2 emission standards. The facilities are to be brought into operation in December 2007.
Another strategic goal is to improve business process efficiency in the ZE PAK SA Group. The key objectives under this heading include reducing electricity and heat generation costs and capturing opportunities presented by the developing energy market.
While focusing on its strategic goals and production cost reduction efforts, the Management Board of ZE PAK SA also undertakes administrative/legal processes necessary to obtain licences and permits required for the proper conduct of the Company’s business. In December 2005, by a decision of the Wielkopolskie Provincial Governor, the Adamów Power Plant was granted an Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Permit for the generation of electricity and heat, and in April 2006 such a permit was issued for the Konin and Pątnów Power Plants. In 2005 the ZE PAK SA power stations were granted an expansion of their existing concession, authorizing the co-combustion of biomass, and thus enabling the commencement of the production of ‘green energy’.
ZE PAK SA is and will remain the largest business partner for many companies in the Konin and Turek region, and the only coal buyer for the KWB Konin SA and KWB Adamów SA brown coal mines. In the coming years, we are also set to be the company that makes the largest capital investments in the region, having a considerable impact on the economic development of the region and providing business not only for local enterprises, but also for companies, producers, and suppliers from the entire Wielkopolska region, all of Poland, and even from abroad.
